This build combines the loads that matter across that whole window — refrigerator, connectivity, sump pump and garage door opener — into one generator plan, because a coastal household doesn’t get to solve evacuation-readiness and storm-water management as separate purchases.

Before landfall: use the generator (or utility power, if it’s still up) to run the garage door opener and get every vehicle, trailer or boat clear — this is a one-time load, not a sustained one, so it costs almost nothing against the rest of the build.
Through the storm: the sump pump and refrigerator become the priority pair, cycling independently as their thermostats and pressure switches call — the 1,500W refrigerator delta is what the generator must always have in reserve.
Keep the electronics bundle running throughout: 250W buys weather updates, phone charging and a working Wi-Fi router if the local network survives, which matters more than any single appliance once the utility power is out for real.

Why include the garage door opener in a hurricane build?

Could this build fit a 4,500W generator instead of 5,500–7,500W?
Close, but not honestly — the 4,963W requirement is 463W past the 4,500W ceiling, similar to the sump-pump-only scenario’s near-miss. The workable trim: skip the garage door opener from the generator plan (use the manual release, or run the car out on utility power before the storm) and the build drops back to the classic 3,688W essentials-plus-sump math, comfortably inside the 3,500–4,500W class.
How does this differ from the plain essentials-plus-sump-pump build?
It swaps the chest freezer for the garage door opener — the bet here is that getting vehicles and equipment clear before landfall matters more to a hurricane-specific plan than a second cold-storage appliance, especially for households that eat down the freezer before a forecast storm anyway.
